A personalized comic book for dad, starring his thing

Turn the thing your dad is known for into the plot of his own comic book: what to tell us, adding the kids as co-stars, and timing it for Father’s Day.

Every dad has the thing he's known for. The grill he won't let anyone else touch, the joke he's told at every cookout, the job he's been doing since before you were born. A personalized comic book takes that thing and makes it the reason he saves the world. Here is how one comes together, using our sample comic about a firefighter named Marcus.

His thing becomes the plot

You start with one clear photo of him and a few questions: what he does, what he loves, a secret, a line he always says. For Marcus, the answers were:

  • A firefighter on Engine 12, and the unofficial grill chief at the firehouse.
  • Backyard barbecue for the whole block every weekend, low-and-slow ribs.
  • He swears his secret rub is "world-famous" and will defend his brisket against the whole neighborhood.
  • His line: "Low and slow, baby."

That's all the comic needs. Those four answers turned into three story ideas, and you pick the one you like best:

  • Super Dad and the Backyard Grill-Off. A towering alien Grill-Lord challenges Earth to a galactic grill-off, and only Marcus and his rub can save the planet.
  • Marcus and the Five-Alarm Cook-Off. At the state barbecue championship, every rival's pit bursts into flames, and only the off-duty firefighter keeps a cool head.
  • The Legend of Marcus's World-Famous Rub. The block swears the rub is magic, so one summer he finally reveals where the recipe came from.

In the first one, every alien champion blasts their meat with star-fire while Marcus refuses to rush. "Low and slow, baby" stops being a catchphrase and becomes the winning move. That's the kind of story a dad reads twice and then shows to everyone at the next cookout.

Make it a gift from the kids

Marcus's sample is just him, but yours doesn't have to be. You can add up to 5 co-stars next to the hero, each with a photo of their own, so the kids, the grandkids, mom and even the pet can be in the story with him. When there's a crew, Bookva also asks what you all love doing together, and that answer goes into the story too.

Will it look like him?

From his photo we draw him as a comic character and keep him consistent on every page, so it's a comic version that's recognizably him rather than a copy of the photo. Glasses, beard, the hat he never takes off: the clearer the photo, the more of that comes through. The whole process is laid out step by step in how a personalized comic book is made.

See it before you pay

You read the cover and the beginning of the comic before you pay anything. After you order, the finished book comes to your email before it prints, and you can ask for changes, which are free.

Timing it for Father's Day or his birthday

Every comic is written, drawn and printed after you order, so most orders arrive within about three weeks. The order summary shows the date yours should arrive by before you pay, so order with that date in mind, not the week before.

If you're shopping for a husband rather than a dad, we wrote a separate guide to a personalized comic book for your husband, with a sample built around a couple.

Nikolai Volosiankov is a product-minded engineer who builds AI automation, and the founder of Bookva. It started at home: he made comics for his own kids, from their ideas and his, and watched how much it meant to them to be the heroes. In 2026 he turned that into Bookva, so anyone can put the person they love into a comic and give it to them. He works on every part of the book, from how the story is written and how each character comes to look like the person in the photo to how it is printed and shipped.
